How Often Should You Replace Your Water Tank in Malaysia?

Nobody thinks about their water tank until the ceiling stain appears. Under the Malaysian sun, a PE poly tank realistically lasts 10–15 years — UV exposure slowly makes the plastic brittle, and the constant fill-drain cycle works the seams.

Warning signs worth checking annually

  • Hairline cracks or a chalky, faded surface on the tank body
  • Water marks down the side of the tank or on the stand
  • Sediment or odd taste in your water — the tank interior is degrading
  • A sagging or rusted mild-steel stand (often the stand fails before the tank)

What replacement involves

A typical terrace replacement is straightforward: we bring the new tank up, swap the connections, fit a new float valve, and remove the old tank — done in half a day, with water off for only a few hours. Budget RM350–950 for the tank depending on size, plus RM500–1,000 installation for a typical terrace. Difficult roof access (no proper hatch, steep tiles) adds to the job, which is why we confirm with a photo first.

Choose the right size, not the biggest

200–250 gallons serves most small families. Go 400+ only if you have a big household or frequent water cuts in your area — oversized tanks add unnecessary load to your roof structure.

One thing people forget

Replace the float valve (pelampung) together with the tank. A worn valve overflows silently down your roof gutters — most owners only discover it from the water bill.
