Adding Aircond, Heater or EV Charger? Read This Before Wiring

A 1990s house was wired for fans, lights and a TV. Today the same house runs three airconds, an instant water heater in every bathroom, an air fryer and maybe an EV in the porch. The wiring did not grow with the load.

Appliances that need a dedicated circuit

  • Air conditioners — every unit on its own 20A line from the DB
  • Instant water heaters — among the highest-draw devices in the house
  • Ovens and induction hobs — kitchen renovations frequently miss this
  • EV chargers — always a dedicated, properly-earthed circuit with its own protection

Sharing a normal 13A socket with these is the classic cause of melted plugs, scorched wall sockets, and breakers that trip every evening at peak usage.

Signs your wiring is at its limit

Warm plug faces, lights dimming when the aircond compressor kicks in, and one MCB that trips whenever two appliances run together. These are capacity problems — adding another extension cord makes them worse, not better.

What installation costs

A dedicated 20A heater or aircond point runs RM200–280. Standard power points RM80–150 each, lighting points RM50–90. For older homes we first check the DB has space and the main cable can take the extra load — sometimes a DB upgrade (RM500–1,500) is the honest prerequisite, and we will tell you before, not after.
